Hollywood has always been fascinated with reviving iconic TV series as movies, but to date, no one has managed to replicate that success - until now, with The Mummy's revival of 80s TV show "The A Team". The Mummy (1999) was the first film in Universal's "Dark Universe" - a series of action thrillers skewing towards darker and daring tones. It introduced Brendan Fraser as Dr. Henry Jekyll, the modernised version of the classic character, and Jon Voight as Mr. Edward Hyde (the deformed and monstrous murderer), and also featured Jolene Blalock as Evelyn Carnahan (Jekyll's wife), John Hannah as John 'Hannibal' Smith (a colonel who works directly for Jekyll), Veronica Cartwright as Charlotte Blackwood (Evelyn's daughter) and Stephen Dorff as Marcus O'Kane (Jakob's lab assistant). The film was written by Stephen Sommers, John D. Brancato and George Nolfi, who previously collaborated on the successful summer blockbuster "The Mummy Returns" (2001), although the latter film only featured the character of Brendan Fraser as a cameo. The film featured returning key member Jonny Lee Miller as Alex O'Connell (a CIA agent) and Hannah's daughter Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as his daughter Evelyn Carnahan - a role which was written for her in an attempt to keep the franchise going with this incarnation. The Mummy Returns (2001) was directed by Stephen Sommers, written by George Nolfi and Sommers, and featured the same core of characters as the first film, although Jon Voight was replaced by Brendan Fraser for this film. This film introduced new characters Alexandra Daddario as Evelyn Carnahan, Jake DNA Jackson as Marcus O'Kane (the son of Hannibal), Anabella Sciorra as Evelyn's mother Morag (a former love interest of Alex), Sofia Vergara as Cleo (a new love interest for Alex), Shaun Toub as Captain Hassan (the Mummy's servant) and Rachel Jackson as Emily Karnstein (Alex's girlfriend). The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns were both successfully made at the time of their respective release, and set the template for future films in the "Dark Universe" including "The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior" (2002), "The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption" (2003) and "" (2008). However, with each successive entry in the series, they became less successful - The Mummy's release was followed by various spin-offs such as "" (2001), "" (2004), "" (2017) and "Dark Universe" films such as "Vampire Chronicles: The Beginning" (2002) and "Vampire Chronicles: Queen of the Damned" (2002).
